It's kind of sad though, there were so many imageboards 10-15 years ago, and slowly but surely several of them went offline, with no real replacements. So the imageboard bubble becomes smaller and smaller. You would think that would lead to existing ones gaining traffic, but even established imageboards are in decline with less and less visitors as the years roll on. It's like old users are leaving them and new, younger users don't see the appeal in them and prefer others things like Discord and Twitter.

OP here with some updates.

With a little digging I managed to find out what happened with ebinlauta.org. Domain was suspended. Also managed to piece together when it was last online - appears to have died at some point between January and February 2025, making it (probably) the first image board death of 2025. It wasn't around long, I think it came online June 2024.

https://alokal.eu/b/ is a Slovakian imageboard that keeps going offline and coming back, likely due to CP being posted. It's currently back online.

https://heretichan.pl/b/ is/was a Polish imageboard. I last visited it in November. It appears to be offline, possibly for good. No idea if it was a 2024 or 2025 death.

https://rchan.top/ is/was a Brazilian image board. I think it died in 2023 or early 2024 but came back online October 2024. However, it is offline again.

55chan, from Brazil, is back with a new board under a .net domain at https://55chan.net/b/

The webring was supposed to be like 8chan except that boards were hosted across different sites for redundancy. It turned out to be individual sites with repeating boards that happen to link to each other. There are relevant sites that aren't part of the webring, including other webrings. The webring is an improvement but it still has issues that constrain its growth.

There is also the increasing danger of being identified or at least characterized through forensic stylometry and author profiling, as well as tracking in embeds/images/videos with steganography or other techniques.
Imageboards as an idea need to be maintained and studied, but probably the technology needs to be expanded or reinvented. Anonymous text and media sharing with low investment is one of the greatest communication inventions of the century and it has been almost immediately snuffed out.

Just to clarify, rchan.fun, which is the one listed in that image, died for good in August might've been July 2023. It was the third iteration of an imageboard named Reinchan, previously reinchan.org and reinchan.net. Each time the bipolar retard admin decided to shut it down with 1-2 days notice and then had a change of heart months later, after the domain and server had both expired. He kept no backups, naturally. That was, to the best of my knowledge, Brazil's first imageboard with user board creation enabled. Technically proj.brchan.org (2012-2014) came earlier but it was limited to big OC projects and relied on board applications being manually approved and fulfilled by the admin, like this one. 

The one that popped up in late 2024 and was mentioned earlier in this thread - rchan.top - is unrelated. No idea who's behind it, seems to be mostly used by some literally who namefags.

I counted 93 boards on the webring. That's without hidden or deleted ones. Not all boards and sites show up on each site in the webring. Some of the hidden boards are bunkers. The first image shows all of the boards and their titles. The second image shows the boards roughly categorized with a short description of their activity. "Active" is defined as having at least 1 post per day. "Slow" is less than 1 post per day. "Dead" means the board hasn't had a post in a year. The age of each board was estimated, usually by looking at the board sticky or the >>1 post. The data may be inaccurate. Going through this list, multiple boards have spam. All of it is recently posted so the mods haven't seen it yet.

In summary, the webring is surprisingly active. There's repeat boards which suggests Anons are picky about where they like to lurk. Some boards are dead or empty and could have been threads or generals on other boards. There's plenty of topics that don't have a board on the webring.

That's true, the activity could be skewed based on the date. There's examples of that in the list. A better way to test it would be measuring the number of posts over the past year, not the total lifespan of the board. If I wanted to do this again, I'd probably automate it with a script. We are too small for entire new boards in certain topics but too jaded to use a thread or an existing board in some other site, such things happen.
