So Terraria released a big update last week. It got me thinking about what genre it, and other "block building" games are. I've heard Terraria described as a "Boss Rush", a "Sandbox game" and a bunch of other shit, but I'm leaning towards it being a metroidvania.

Arguments for Yes:
>2D sidescrolling sandbox platformer that demands exploration and backtracking
>Movement based upgrades that help with traversal
>health upgrades hidden throught the enviroment
>Secret weapons and unique areas hidden thoughout the game

Arguments for No:
<Upgrades technically not mandatory to reach new areas or even beat the game.
<New skyblock mode proves you can literally remove all exploration from the game and it still functions.
<Lack of intentionality in design. Comparing 1.0 release to 1.4 proves that many of the metroidvania aspects were added later.

Also Terraria general.

I don't get the appeal of this game. The bosses aren't good. The regular mobs aren't good. Building isn't fun because it's 2D. It feels like most of the gameplay is just farming for shit. It's awful, honestly.

Bosses are great, regular mobs are fun, building is great because of the restriction to 2D. That's my opinion. That and it's been constantly updated for many, many years with no increase in cost. Only downside is they recently went Body Type because they're stupid faggots embroiled in the current cultural zeitgeist like the rest of this disordered world.

Can you quantify how the bosses and mobs aren't good?

I thought the body type bullshit has been there for years and what they recently added was "nonbinary" characters, as in players can mix and match body parts from A and B.

Most of them are beaten by running in one direction or running in circles. The only boss that made me think "wow, this is a proper boss fight" was Empress of Light.
>>301350
Terraria is what Minecraft could have been if that lazy slob Notch hadn't given up on finishing his game the moment he didn't have to work anymore.
The defining feature of Metroid-likes is exploration progression gated by action abilities which function as keys to access more of the world. Terraria has a certain degree of collectible action abilities, but it doesn't really gate progression with them to a huge degree. Furthermore, the vast majority of them you usually obtain before fighting the first couple of bosses (hooks, double jumps, speed shoes), without only one more substantial mobility enhancement focused on after the Wall of Flesh (wings). In fact, perhaps the largest reason to collect action abilities is not so much to explore more of the world, but to survive increasingly elaborate boss fights as the game progresses. The world of Terraria also isn't built around ability progression since it relies entirely on procedural generation instead of level design. Because of this it needs to be classified in a genre more substantially unique from Metroid-likes.

The answer to this question is actually surprisingly easy to derive: is Terraria part of Konami's Castlevania series of games that borrow heavily from the mould of Super Metroid with added RPG stat mechanics? No? It's not even published by Konami? Well then the answer is "No." You stupid fucking faggot.

I feel like the only person in the world who gets upset every time there's a new Terraria update. I've been working for ages on mastering the game enough to complete a one-life-one-world Master mode challenge, but every time I get close to finishing this it seems like they push out a new big game update that dramatically alters the game balance and wrecks the skills I've invested so much time into honing.

What's taking you so long? I did this back in 2020. The only two things you need to do: put recall potions on an easily reachable hotkey and use one whenever you feel like you might die, and overprepare for everything (have best weapons and armor, best buffs, all potions).
It took a few failed tries, but they failed very early on. Once a run gets going it's hard to fuck up. I beat Moon Lord and every other boss and realized I had skipped Empress of Light which was brand new at the time, so I fought her expecting another easily cheesable shitty boss and I FUCKING DIED because they defied expectations and made the only real boss in the game.
Replies: >>301375
>>301372
The late bosses and waves still give me trouble, and more recent game updates have had a trend of removing exploits I used to rely on for them. Ironically I made some substantial progress upgrading my skills on newer content I was always afraid of facing last year and I'm actually quite good at beating the Empress of Light now, but I still have no idea how to handle the Moon Lord on Master mode. I've come up with a very satisfying Queen Slime mount strategy for the Moon Lord on Expert but it just isn't good enough to survive Master mode. I'm also still unsatisfied with the tedious amount of arena preparation I always do for Plantera, and Duke Fishron still feels like a tossup whether I'll win or lose. The alien invasion saucer also often ruins my runs, and I don't have really have reliable strategies for the frost and pumpkin moon events.

It also doesn't help that my friends are Terraria deadbeats or casuals who won't touch Master mode, and it's hard to find the motivation to play through Master mode on softcore on my own to more effectively practice the late game content.

I used to play terraria back when it was new. Not autistically lot but I did beat the wall of flesh. I don't remember how or why, I grew to hate it, it looks like shit and sounds like shit, I think if I were to hear the cave soundtrack again I would go insane and paint a pentagram with my own blood while screaming. I simply don't know why, it is the only game that makes me feel that way. These dogshit graphics infuriate me.
Despite it taking place 15 years ago I can still imagine standing there in some boring cave swinging hammer 30 times to break some max health up heart, this slow nauseating animation, swinging my sword at the skeleton 10 swings in a row while he just moves into it doing these ungodly sounds. I cannot bear this, terraria is hell.

God this piece of shit game with 2000 infatuated updates.
Why are they still updating it and not making a new game when they could fix all their woes and go ham with new stuff in every way instead?
You're not even milking any money and, most of the time, mods do what you do a thousand times better, so why are they even bothering?
The core loop has not changed since ML was introduced. It's all been bloat and bloat and bloat stacked on top.
And while the unique seeds are, in concept, a decent subversion, they don't change the core loop. They only make it much more annoying to go through.
This game is like their one shred of pride they're too afraid to leave behind at this point because they want people to remember that they exist?
Or they don't want to take new risks?
But there's no fucking glory to be had in adding useless new shit to a rotting corpse that was preserved and well remembered before you dug it out and started to bloat the fucking thing with useless shit until it started stinking up the fucking place.
(Btw, no, I don't believe these coffee collabs or whatever are bringing in that much money.)

Please, do tell us how shitting 5000 more cosmetics, some worthless golf system, the slime pets, the pets, and wind of all things make a game more "worthwhile of playing".
The only good changes have been: the pylons, which is made a bit worse by the fact that it also introduced the happiness bullshit.
The whips, which made a half baked class a slight bit more interesting to play. (But hybrid is just as viable and more fun in most cases.)
And the EOL, which is an actual boss instead of whatever slight bump the other "bosses" are.
A sequel allows you to optimise the base you already have, explore new ideas you couldn't implement, and add more since you're not anchored to a setting that's already set in stone.
And if a game doesn't need a sequel, then it sure as shit doesn't need 20 superfluous updates that does fucking nothing stapled on top of it.

The game does not really "require" anything per say to get through, and some people have done the entire game omitting entire mechanics (npcs, crafting, fucking movement keys of all things, etc.)
Meanwhile, a metroidvania will just plainly have you need to get movement abilities or just "can't go past here without x thing" moments. Unless you glitch the fuck out of the game, of course.

Terraria is beatable so I wouldn't consider it a "never finished" game. Free updates are always appreciated as long as they don't take away content. I don't believe that anyone is loosing out whenever a developer adds more to a game instead of making a new one, as the next game could easily be total dog shit. I understand the frustration when studios like Bungie or Yacht Club get locked into developing forever games but there is no guarantee that the man hours spent updating an existing game would have been put towards anything worthwhile.

This is a generalized pylon hotel design, that's just a snapshot of it at a given moment in time. I play on Hardcore Master mode more than anything, where catastrophic failure is never more than a few seconds of carelessness away. 3 villagers may not always be present at a given time for any number of reasons, and during events like Blood Moons they can't suppress the spawn rates anyway. At minimum I always want to warp somewhere with a wall at my back so I don't have to worry about a wyvern spawning to fuck my shit up in areas that are a little too close to the sky.

As for wraiths and reapers, they are one of the reasons I usually build floating hotels in the first place, or at least try to keep warp points and NPC housing a minimum height above the surrounding terrain. Not pictured in other image is a biome lake below the hotel for convenient and safe fishing. That's what the holes and toilet (+5 fishing power) are there for on the bottom floor.

His sanpaku says otherwise, and in photos where his moustache is shaved, his lips always have this displeased, uncomfortable, and vaguely fearful look to them. It also brings out the awkwardness of his glare and a sort of nervous tension you can see in his facial muscles.
Growing that moustache was probably the best thing Nieztsche ever did for his image and legacy. It overwhelms the rest of his face and tends to become the thing the artist's eye and the eye of the memory latches onto. Any sign that he isn't the image he wishes to project of himself is overlooked or covered, and the effect is so strong that it covers not only much of his face, but his fate as well.

>Don't enjoy how the devs have "balanced" this game over the years passed 1.3 even.
This is a surprising take to me. You really don't like that they made more class-based specializations viable? You don't like that they finally made melee weapons more competitive with ranged weaponry?

lol?
They turned most "melee" weapons into throwables or stuff that hits at range. Class specialization is whatever but not all of them are viable especially when they get nerfed in retarded ways.
Does listening to reddit for balance not perturb you too? Those fuckers couldn't do game design if it bite them on the ass giving them a bug to make them specialized at it.

It's about the best the game is going to get in terms of melee balance unless they added some integral short-range mobility mechanics like rolls or parries, which would fundamentally change Terraria. As it is, Terraria has never really had the sort of limited enemy design that works well with really short-range weaponry. Just contrast for example Castlevania (especially the non-Metroidvania ones) monsters and bosses with Terraria's. About mid-way through the game Terraria's enemies become substantially more mobile than Castlevania's. Castlevania can justify the slow, deliberate mobility of a guy with a whip by setting hard restrictions on what enemies are allowed to do. Increasing the range of various melee weaponry was the logical solution for Terraria's situation.

RANGED: shoots projectiles, has minions
MAGIC: shoots projectiles, has minions
MELEE: shoots projectiles, has minions
SUMMONER: shoots projectiles, has minions

Nigger, the "class system" in this is a joke and they all play the exact same.

You triggered half of this retarded board with a single post, congratulations.

Truthnvke.
I thought about hosting a game now that the updates have stabilized and I don't have to play the usual game of GOG releases being a week behind Steam patches pushed on DRM lovers, but I don't have much confidence in this board tbh. Maybe someone else would like to.
