No thread on the catalog so I'm making one. Mainly for the classic grid-based party dungeon crawler but other games are welcome too (not like it's a genre with many proper titles and it already peaked on PS2).

It really depends on the maze design. I personally don't like EO games that much. Legends of Grimrock or pic related are overall better and more enjoyable games.
It's a special kind of itch but only a bunch of games know how to scratch of it. I'm aware that most of these games are shit.

Well, I think you already know.
I thought the setting, art, story and all were really great, I really liked the look of Schwartzwelt, but the gameplay less so. The things people complain about online seem really trivial. If you're very conservative with your resources and demon sources then you'll have more than enough to deal with bosses. I don't know how you can even balance the game if you're giving players stuff like Invitation (Immediately revive and resummon a demon) or Antichthon (Deals huge damage and applies every stat debuff status effect to enemy), even if its only lategame.

That part where a hallucination of General Gore shows up and commands you to have a honorable discharge (by killing yourself) and you have to resist the mind control to do so should be in a movie or something.

How much different are the 3DS Etrian Odyssey remakes over the originals, if I choose classic mode? How does the artstyle clash with the original portraits and aesthetic?
Wanted to play the originals for JP learning though I'm cautious over the bitcrushed DS font, yet playing a remake instead of the first release still bothers me.
Is it pretty much the same game, the remake, as in with the same classes and cast? I need to uohhhhh.

I've never played a dungeon crawler. Can anyone recommend me a short game that will show me the appeal of the genre? I have a Vita and a 3DS, but I wouldn't mind emulating retro titles as well.

Hey anons, after 8chan died I never got into the webring much.

But as of late I've been playing some dungeon crawlers, which I don't recall playing before, and having some fun. There's this one called Savior of Sword City Revisited which has built-in support for adding your own characters to the game, so I made an entire party out of cute girls from fantasy anime and manga I like and gave them the class that most suits them. E.g. Naga from Slayers is a wizard, Melissa from Mahou Senshi Louie is a cleric.

I also made all the characters I modded into the game available for everyone, so in the odd chance anyone plays this obscure game (it didn't even have a moddb page before I made these) and you like anime from better times, you can play with them too:

There was a mod website that focuses on "/pol/ 'tism" and even the name suggests that, but one of their few rules is that loli stuff is not allowed.

And RPGs suck because of it. I don't want these overbloated melodramatic padded drags, that shit has gotten completely out of hand. Give me a game with interesting mechanics, a solid storyline I CAN get invested in because it doesn't have the 50 hours of wandering a world map and grindan in between story beats, innumerate superfluous chunks of filler dialogue, blah blah blah...
I'm not specifically talking about DRPGs with that complaint, in fact this one subset of the genre is one where I think it can comfortably pull off overlong games because of how easily they can give you a bare-bones story and let the "emergent storytelling" of your party's experiences fill in the gaps for you. But on the same note, that also means that you can cut a lot of the bullshit and serve up a tight, shorter experience with more interesting gameplay just as easily. Most of the jap ecchi dungeon crawlers would be so much better if they weren't bloated with over 9,000 lines of shallow VN dialogue.
Being left wanting is a million times more preferable to me than starting out really liking an experience, but ending up getting sick and tired of its bullshit after xxx hours of it droning on and on.

Would trying out a dungeon or two inside a 40 hours game, then decide whether to continue do it for you? You've said it with the "emergent storytelling", you can impose your own limits.
Besides, you can argue the same about any FPS game that breaks away from the usual rigid level structure with no exploration of sorts.

That classic MegaTen booklet was entirely scanned and uploaded to the internet over 11 years ago ( archive.ph/4PvhP ), but for some reason it never got translated to English, aside from one page of commentary by Aya Nishitani ( archive.ph/bcwAE )

Anyway, I gotta say it's pretty disappointing to see what's become of most of the ex-Atlus staff.
Tsukasa Masuko and Ryutaro Ito are the only ones who still do their usual work in the game industry.
Kazunari Suzuki is mostly a hobby novelist nowadays, not doing much in gaming aside from supervising whatever Ryutaro Ito writes.
Cozy Okada has become a vapourware merchant with little to no public presence, the project he announced years ago was never once shown.
Kazuma Kaneko's latest works were NFT shit and AI shit.
Tadashi Satomi has shown no signs of existence since his minor involvement in Caligula2.

On a related note: Kaneko just had his 61st birthday recently. I hope life's been treating him well, aside from the whole "sold his soul to NFTs and AI" thing.
