If I didn't know any better, I'd say this was cooked up by the spooks to cover up moving to the bunker or retiring in protection under a pseudonym. But already covering up the locations and timeline is too typical of an embarrassing death.

I think day one was for a photoshoot like you say, but in a "secure" location like the other Strelok said, but happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when the Russians figured out the location of the actual factory.
Either that, or they saw his post on social media, figured the real factory was too good a target to pass up, and sussed out the location from his vehicle or cell phone, not unlike tracking the Antarctica Fitbit.
