I'm tired of pretending steam is cool. Why everyone likes this fucking corporation so much... It's literally what's killing videogames, yet it gets more and more popular, people are crazy. Even on imageboards there are faggots who worship steam releases. Never pay a single penny for a digital videogame.

It makes it easier to mod, I don't pay for dlc tho

I don't love it, but there are also worse things out there. I wouldn't want to praise Gaben too much out of hand.
>Never pay a single penny for a digital videogame.
If a game is good and the devs are not fags then it's perfectly reasonable to give them a few shekels. But you should never pay for shit, nor should you ever pay too much for a single game.
>>304966 (OP)
>it's killing videogames!
How? What's killing videogames is the woke incompetence, Bethesda being exhibit A. Steam literally just sells the game.
>waaa faggots paid a penny
you can't pirate everything, you ass clown. Better to get a steam holiday deal. If it wasn't for steam, the other kikes would be offering you like 5% off 20 year old games.
the only bad thing about Steam is that it prevented Valve from making more Halflife kino.

Same for me, I like to own my games.

The only issue is that steamies are annoying as FUCK. I deleted steam and only use epic becaue of how fucking annoying they are, deleted it 3 years ago.

People like to glaze steam but they also don't realise that their store is addictive as possible and makes you want to spend more money than you should. Luckily timmy is retarded and doesn't use similar methods cause he doesn't want to canabalise fortnite.

steam IS cool, while gaben's speech was mostly PR he was 110% correct about it: piracy IS a question of bad service and bad products, steam at least solves 1 of those things.

Online-only garbage is never cool. Reminder that you buy a "licence" to own the game, you only borrow it, so your purchases are at risk of turning into pumpkins at any time.

It doesn't even have to get that bad. They're already pushing mandatory digital ID sign-in for big online platforms. Then they'll have social credit system. Have you been a bad goy? Oops, can't login to "your" games anymore.
I despise Steam and it has done significant damage, but there are greater evils than it in the industry and it could be a lot worse if I'm being honest.
Its a ticking time bomb that people have deluded themselves into believing is on their side, but excessive centralization and monopoly makes a fool out of everyone eventually.

"Software as a service" is a bigger problem than just games trying to become always online. Draining your wallet in barely perceptible ways, if you allow to replace purchase with paid subscription.

It's convenient and casuals don't understand the problem with DRM platforms or Steam-only games. Meanwhile most attempted competitors manage to be inconvenient and more consumer-hostile and deceptive so Steam looks good every time others do something fucked up. When you add in the fact that fandom culture promotes taking it personally when someone shits on or even talks about something you use or like and hivemind culture promotes trying to ensure you and everyone around have the same socially "correct" opinion, you have hordes of retards singing praises and running defense for Steam.

It's just fucking stupidity, mostly.

The only reason I can think of is that they are better than the alternatives which isn't exactly a great reason. Jacking up the price by taking a 30% cut of all video game sales is scummy as hell. The only thing Steam has going for it is that it is generally lenient about the content that gets posted on it but it isn't better than dlsite so it is only considered lenient to compared to the other publishing giants

The majority of tvs have terrible latency and poor refresh rate. Playing games on one would be miserable for me unless I had an expensive TV that was good at both of those things

You're a hyperbolic retard who doesn't understand basic ease to use and functionality. Otherwise gog is only good for one thing and one thing only downloading garbage and indie games outside of ancient games that aren't even worth more than $2 you would never pay for even on sale because durrhurr nostalgia and brand value

Kettle, please. GOG can, does, and will sell games that are neither old nor "garbage and indie games". In terms of volume Steam is most certainly the purveyor of endless garbage and indie games. Now your statement about "ease of use and functionality" may have some merit, but such things are trifles. These trifles are why the niggercattle use what they use, sure, but they're still trifles and don't represent anything of real value to the end user. You don't have to walk barefoot on glass to download a GOG game.

The literal only shit GoG sells is AAA slop and ancient games and some indie games Japanese games? inconsistent releases with censorship with no real basis.
No other platform lets me configure my controller binds than steam and that's not even mentioning basic Linux support.

Very bad. I shouldn't have to buy something I don't want to get the one I want. The whole point in product bundling is to delude dumb people into thinking they're getting something more at better value (an extra game they will never play, because they didn't actually want it much in the first place).

Oh yes I can relate to this as someone who used steam to play VRCHAT on Windows. TBH I no longer play VRCHAT along with steam as a whole. Not only is it killing videogames but we would be just culling minors. We sincere had enough of this shit.
When it goes to videogaming nowadays but if we wanted to see freely but legally; its either itch.io or do nothing at all.

Personally it's not just about being able to truly own a game or the censorship to me, it's the blatant shilling on the platform. "You played x so that means you should like y" which is bullshit on so many levels it's not even funny. Why would I want a deeply inferior experience to something I just played just so the gameplay can be similar?

I'm not a pro-piracy maniac and I don't like DRM systems, including Steam. GOG is better, but physical copies are best. Except physical copies are increasingly going the way of the dodo now because fucking BluRay had to win the format wars instead of HD-DVD so that we could all overpay massively for a burnable disc and watch it rape the profit margin of a purchase (especially a $10 purchase) harder to make the concept of selling physical copies even less appealing.

In 2004 people meant other things by that. When they said "realistic woman," they actually meant "realistic woman" not "fat ugly bitch." When they said "variety of genders" they didn't mean "attack helicopters, transgenders, intersex, etc." either. They just meant both men and women.
