Did Lain have any influence or following in Japan? I've heard that the creator of Lain said something like "westerners won't understand this story" or whatever, but I only see westerners (troons specifically) obsessing over this shitty show/character.

lain is a good show though :(
Replies: >>264678
I never heard of anyone Japanese mention lain most tend to reference one piece or attack on titan or more obscure anime.
>westerners won't understand this story
Asinine only a woman or a child could fail at understanding it being cryptic visually does not change the underlying meaning.
Lain is great. Deranged people liking something doesn't make it bad, moron creators commentary doesn't make it bad either.

>westerners won't understand this story
No shit, there's going to be cultural shorthands that you're not going to pick up on unless you've lived there your whole life, that's just how it is with foreign media.

When Lain is discussed in Japan it's about its visuals and atmosphere mostly, and what the producer of Lain wanted/bet on was different interpretations from Japanese and western audiences only to be disappointed when both came to the same conclusion on its plot and themes, disappoint likely coming from how globalized the world was at that point.

the episode named PROTOCOL is very appropriate today considering it's the backbone of internet and new protocols drives people crazy. censors in my country now banning entire new protocols (like xmpp, openvpn, wireguard) because they deviate from normal TLS/HTTP
this what anime was about, we are connected, but... not. only because they let us connect... up until the point. the shots of wires in the anime if metaphor of connection driven by centralization. it was very important to not lose touch with reality. internet was temporary, and it will be destroyed

Does Japanese media has a fascination with telephone poles and electrical wire? I read somewhere there was but I never noticed or maybe even saw so, and the post is definitely gone by now.
