[Hide] (767.4KB, 1000x700) Reverse Final Fantasy Versus XIII is gonna get rebooted as "Final Fantasy XVII". Not Verum Rex; Final Fantasy Versus XIII. This is the real deal.
The project, with Nomura in full charge, intends to deliver FFV13 as it was always meant to be, but with modern technical capabilities; more precisely, it's aiming to reproduce the state as it was immediately before the previous project was handed over to Tabata. This means:
- 100% seamless and open-world, with original locations, nations and cities ALL accessible and fully explorable (including Insomnia, Tenebrae, the entirety of Niflheim, Solheim, and also others)
- Combat returned to its original KH-like style, with all characters fully playable, and discarded gameplay elements restored (swimming, underwater battles, playable mechs, mech fights, multiplayer elements, etc.)
- All original story fully delivered from start to finish, with all original story elements included (Etro, the star in the sky, the eyes that can see the light of expiring souls, etc...) and all characters fully developed (including Stella) and returned to their original looks and roles; it will be 1 single self-contained game, with no sequels or DLCs planned.
Lore-wise, it will reuse the Fabula Nova Crystallis mythology, but with completely different terminology, so officially it won't have any connection to FF13 or Type-0.
The project has been in planning since the very moment FF15 released, and started active development in 2020; it was initially intended to be released in 2025 for PS5, but then decided to turn it into a PS6 launch title, which will also give them more time to work on KH4; hence the delay.
Story, script, voices and soundtrack are already 100% done.
According to the current plans, the official announcement should happen somewhen after KH4 releases. They're planning to keep completely silent until that point, and then release the game no more than 6 months afterwards, but those 6 months will be packed with lots of information releases, two very long trailers, and a huge marketing campaign.
It will be Nomura's crowning achievement, and his last work before retirement. Also (unless it does better than any other FF in history), it will also be the truly last mainline Final Fantasy.

Q) Why should I believe you?
A) I'm sorry I can't give you any actual proof for this would put me at very high risk; however think deeply about why, after having teased Versus so hard for so long, and not even being forbidden anymore to talk about it, Nomura would still apparently choose to abandon it in order to give precedence to yet another KH, whose main story is now concluded.
Q) Why are you posting this?
A) The speculations about a possible Versus reboot have been going on for too long. After no less than 20 years, half of which waiting for (what was supposed to be) Versus, the other half being subjected to a constant tease-and-denial about its imminent return, people started gradually becoming de-sensitized. You can only keep people's hype on for so long before they start losing interest. If this keeps going, the game will release amidst the general indifference.
The suits at SquareEnix don't seem to be aware of this, neither does Nomura (who I still deeply respect for his creativity). I hope this will drive them to anticipate the official reveal so this painful game of edging will finally end. While techically representing a break of the NDA, I actually think I am doing them a favor by making this.
I would've posted this on 4chan for maximum effect, but I'm choosing this site for security reasons; if someone would be so kind to re-post it on X and/or 4chan, I'll be very glad.
Q) How will they justify having another mainline FF with the same setting and characters as FF15?
A) The story is implied to be set in the same world as Final Fantasy XV, but in a different timeline; this however will only be briefly and vaguely mentioned through the game; you won't need to play XV in order to understand XVII.
Q) What about Verum Rex?
A) It was never intended to be an actual game. It only exists in the KH universe; its only purpose was to let people know that Versus was not abandoned.
Q) What about KH4?
A) It's almost finished and it's coming soon; Yozora is playable and will have a major role in it. The game will reveal a lot about the incoming Versus Reboot in many ways (it will practically be a massive Versus commercial), but will have no official connection.
Q) What about FF7R part 3?
A) That's also almost finished. The name will be: Final Fantasy VII REUNION. Little to say about this, if you liked REBIRTH, you will definitely like REUNION too; if you didn't, you won't like this either.
Q) What about FF9 remake?
A) There will be no remake. The possibility was real (it was seriosly discussed for a long time inside the company), but in the end it was concluded against it. Work with the french animation studio is still continuing, though.
