My one experience with a Monster Hunter game was the demo for that 3DS entry.  I thought the control were hilariously incompetent; they completely misused the D-pad and analog stick for things they would have been better suited.  Are the rest of the games like this?

Oh hey, you finally made the new thread. Shame about the reply limit of ye olde thread, as I would have liked to add that you *really* needed to add a disclaimed about the loading times of portable freedom being so awful. That also apply to a couple of first gen titles but it's especially awful there. And that sunbreak might be the meat and potatoes but there's also a very strong taste of sawdust filler in there.

You don't even need an analog stick for camera control, camera controls were handled just fine on plenty of consoles with only a single stick.  The absolutely baffling thing to me is them refusing to use the 3DS's one analog stick for movement control.  I sometimes hear people say if I like PSO, I'll probably like Monster Hunter.  But PSO got the controls right 20 years ago on the Dreamcast with a single analog stick, what's Monster Hunter's excuse?  Primitive analog movement with a single button for centering the camera is still vastly superior to digital movement with pointless analog on the camera.

Gotcha, I'll post tomorrow. I did try the meta thread, but I guess you didn't see it + by necro'ing it I think it got drowned out by people skimming the thread again.
I lucked out too, turns out the final boss for Stories 3 was indeed Aenshin (it's a floating crystal-diseased whale-narwhal), so I knew what to look for past all the clickbait, and I managed to source it's icon like 15 minutes after a source got posted (only a few hours after the game released). On one hand I'm tempted to do a revision especially le classic "you notice one tiny mistake that only you will ever care about, right after you posted it" thing that always happens, but sometimes it's best to let good enough be good enough rather than endless edits.

I'm not a PSOfag and my only experience with PSO was a dramafag offtopic schizo who invaded one of my lurks years back, but from what I know / have heard;
 - I'd assume the closest example to PSO would be Frontier, which was the MMO spinoff in it's own right
 - The only Phantasy Star game I've heard mentioned as an Action Hunter was Phantasy Star Zero for the NDS. All I vaguely remember about that was that it's aimed at a younger demographic and had fairys + cowboys, and pretty tiny areas.

IIRC Phantasy Star is more just an Action JRPG in it's own right, rather than a Action Hunter. If anything you might have a better time with God Eater since that's the most JRPG-y of the subgenre (that I can name / bother to remember), but it just seems like apples and oranges. Just skimming gameplay of Phantasy Star Portable; I honestly see Ni No Kuni more than MonHun.

Could be a screw. You don't usually need to remove the bayonet unless troops are being moved by a transport, which requires some preparation anyway and probably too luxurious for regular troops in this setting. Simply legging to another place shouldn't be impeded by affixed blade too much.

It's definitely modelled after a bayonet that should use a lug. Socket bayonets need a much longer socket that usually wraps around the sight, otherwise it would just rattle and fall off. Not to mention that such a fancy handle is completely wasted on a bayonet that is not supposed to be removed at all. On top of that, the blade is way too close for a muzzle loader, if she tried to reload it during combat she could easily cut her fingers. 

But then again, it's just one of those things that really activates my autism in a bad way.

Stories 3, I already mentioned my thoughts in the OP; the only minor change is that it's less Pokemon and more Dinosaur King (if you remember that one years back); but saying that isn't as easy on the character count for a small box, just saying Pokemon gets the point across. I know they messed with a some of the older super-moves for some reason, I know Kut-Ku and Brachydios's are gimped, but the new ones alright (Kulu's got a funny go-pro style one). As for stuff that's more than just what you can watch on YouTube, I don't know if the difficulty is more even pre-postgame (1+2 were kiddies games, but have 1-2 fights that force you to have had good eugenics at the end, which some people liked, but just doesn't seem worth my time), but it does seem aimed at the vague Pokemon demographic. The open world has more going for it at the very least; it fits the style of the game.

with decent sized (if single) slots for the big decos. Rakna's got a few decent pieces too if you want to drop one Diablos for the Head/Coil Tune-up for the improved shield recoil + slots. Between the two and decos, I'd say that would take you to late endgame.
The only others with innate Guard are Barroth (a more generalist option), Bazel (Gunlance), Heavy Knight (Arlow's Follower reward, just before MR5, and low on deco slots) and Ibushi-Narwa + Stormsoul (a long way yet)

You still have your weapon drawn..... that's not crouching.... having to sheathe and crouch / crouchwalk is why I don't like bleed, because it's what you've got to do to heal it (especially without access to jerky to cure it).....

I wouldn't see it as something deliberate, just a passive extra. It's like Focus on DB's - I can charge them to Archdemon in like 1-2 backscratches for larger targets anyways, but it's not a totally dead skill to have on a set, since it works for my weapon and keeps my gauge a little bit longer, so I might have a tiny bit of gauge when in a new zone / so I don't need to start a new area outside of archdemon (even if it's aimed at GS / CB / GL).
Also that full Lunagaron gear, I wear from like low 400's to mid 600's in defense. Not sure how that translates to actual reduction, but I'll happily take like 25% less damage from everything if it does what that sounds like, I was really behind on upgrades. Maybe I'll be 3shot instead of 2shot by Diablos - yippee!

Reading up on them, the Apexes seem to be just side-objectives in the random-generated Anomaly investigations for MR, not full-dedicated quests. We can head back to HR to clean them up, but probably not as much of a fight as I was hoping. At the very least, the Risens should put up a fight, but they unlock every 20MR instead of every 10 like I thought

Well, at the very least, since you were gone, I did what Billy Mitchell would do, and grinded the fuck out of the Anomaly Quests to get them all unlocked despite the Billy Mitchell method, it still took a few hours, and I'm still not the max-rank of 300, only ~241, where the catchup XP multiplier falls off and nothing more is unlocked, holy shit it'd be a brutal grind if I was doing it legit. Now, I don't exactly know how the level scaling works with them, but the lowdown is that I've got all the Apexes and Risens unlocked now, and that should translate to you needing to do far less / no grinding to also be able to them (since none of them have an associated event quest that we can hop over to).
Since the Apexes only show up as side-objectives, I'm still split on if we should do the HR single-objectives, or the MR versions and just ignore the other targets (ignoring other limits on the quests).
The Risens on the other hand, apparently have dedicated Urgent / Standard quests outside of Anomalies, but if they prove too much of a pushover, we can still hit their dedicated solo-hunt Anomalies. While I did think of setting the final goal to be the . At the very least for those, as a byproduct of blitzing through the Anomalies, my hidden MR pre-cap should be enough that we have options between normal, fixed anomaly and anomaly investigation. I might / should also be able to use a custom-Anomaly mod that lowers the Anomaly quest level and target below legal limits, so that's another possible workaround to avoid grind.

It only took me a few hours to get most of it done (a lot of help was "all monsters are investigation target" and "raises last quest to your maximum rank" ones), you don't sound to be doing it optimally. You could probably get it done faster with the Investigation editor if you just do the hardest quest restrictions that passes your legality check, since (for now) you still oneshot.
Actually, what MR / Investigation Level are you? No point doing a lobby if we're still at nothing available to hunt.

My concern isn't if we can survive it (that's just gitting gud), but if we can numerically kill it. As is, we usually push the 20-30 minute mark, but if it's intended for 4 +has additional damage mitigation for being an investigation + is an Elder so can't be captured and requires a full slay +is Kushala with dogshit hitzones, the real enemy of the fight might be the 50 minute clock.

As for if it's possible, I've ran the numbers and it ....should be at the very least. According to Kiranico:

Since it's a Risen varient and not an Anomaly, it doesn't have any additional damage mitigation, it's just the extra-state that's a threat (made worse by MHExtra mod making it permanently in that state once it hit's the natural threshold at ~80%).
So, aside from it being one giant shitzone with no good places to attack, it.... "should" be doable in sub-50 minutes. I've optimised my gear a little bit so I've got more Defense to work with (to prevent me from getting repeatedly chunked for 40% of my health by area-sized attacks through Divine Blessing Dango like in >>306781 ), and I remembered I've also got the option to swap my scroll (since Mail of Hellfire either drops my Defense by -100 or nukes my Resistances by -55, but since Kushala has no element aside from the Dragon-stomp, it's not as big a deal to screw my Resistances) (the only thing is that while in Element stance, my status Poison-Blast Dualblades benefit absolutely nothing, so it'd just be for the extra +100 Def safety net and mobility with normal Demon Mode instead of Feral, with a notable tradeoff in damage) (which itself is more of a problem, since as we've already experienced, Kushala is tanky as is, and TTK is shaping to be the name of this fight).
If we manage to get a long fight and it's not at least limping / skull icon by the 35 minute mark, I don't mind swapping to the base quest version in the interest of doable-or-not.

So uhhh yeah. Take your time, prep up because unless we accidentally first-time it next session, this looks to be the true challenge longhaul endgame we were after.
I've not added any additional damage to my DB's, I just skipped the grind to open all the slots and max out the Status buildup, but since you're using naturally lower-damage-tuned weapons, I really don't give a fuck if you go all in with whatever build you want, since I'll be focusing on the duty of maintaining Poison to suppress it as much as possible (just in terms of optimising, DB's have always been king of Status, so if I'm doing 75%+ of the legwork keeping it Poisoned, I might as well be on duty for it and let you build for something that suits you better). I'll also try not to run ahead of you and play with it alone, we'll need to work together. Also, it's mentioned that the counter to it's drag-vortex attacks is Wirebugging, similar to how Amatsu was, so keep that in mind.

Gonna be honest, I always thought kush did some partial ice damage so it's surprising to learn it only has dragon on one attack.
Yeah, if you want to get poison going, I can just switch to a full thunder lance build and try to be as much of a final fantasy dragoon as I can.
My poison lance was just 47 base + 5/20% buildup without chameleos blessing, after all, so it was probably not doing that much in term of status.

Completely glossing over opinions towards various changes to the systems and design, it's just a pre-G-Rank / non-U game right now, the expansion is almost certainly being announced at SGF for the end of year (since it's following the release pattern of the previous games to a T), and that should be a significant amount of content in it's own right, without needing to wait on release schedule. Wait until the DLC is out if you're big into public / casual play then as soon as it's out, or if you just want the full package, wait until the final Title Update (probably Dalamadur).

I could wax on for a while about it, but to cut to the chase, there's definitely flaws, but a lot of them can easily be salvaged depending on Capcom's choices for the DLC. Lack of difficulty was one of them (and they sure as fuck fixed that in the title updates), the rest remains to be seen. At the same time, most discussion you'll see online is too dismissive of the things it did well.
tl;dr really, it's just another mainline entry. It wasn't as big of a generational leap as World was, but that doesn't mean it's alright. Make sure your rig can run it however, because it does have those triple-A spec requirements (and actually uses them). The performance fixes were aimed at getting it to run better at those specs (which they did well), not lowering those specs.

MHExtra Rising Fury Risen Shagaru Magala (or shaggy) isn't going down without a fight.
And by a fight, it's 25mins+ in the ragecage, where it can 2shot you at any point across the map, has multiple trueconfirms, can trap you in a corner, has a mechanical oneshot attack the nuke is actually survivable, but if you get hit by the pillars, it's what sets up the nuke to insta's you, has partbreak thresholds higher than some monster's healthpools and has it's own status, where if you're not aggressive enough you lose all natural non-buff regeneration.

So finally, something close to a challenge....

Thank you boarfag for telling me about these hard mods. Game would most likely have rot in my library and stayed forever unfinished otherwise.
And thank you modfags for making these. It wasn't perfect, it had hitbox issues, and it even deleted teostra from the game and replaced it with a kitten spewing embers but it completely rescued the game for the depths of mediocrity and made it a realised vision.
We came, we killed chaos, and we left.
Now I wonder if I should write a 2000 word essay about why the base game and its DLC is actually very below average and much worse than I expected everything to be.
