More creative than concise.
They will never, ever be competitive like most fightan enjoyers prefer, with the amount of ways you can break it over your knee (from wall gravity resets, to low-meteor combos, to assist wakeups, to unreliable physics) (even before the flaws of the whole arena fighter subgenre - the arcsys KlK fighting game proved almost without a shadow of a doubt that no matter how hard it tries, it's never going to happen); but all the characters feel extremely distinct from one another, and have very creative ways their superpowers are implemented (eg, there's a guy who can mindcontrol people if they respond to him, in-game he revolves around baiting out the enemy's voicelines when performing actions to make openings), so instead of a roster of 30 slim variants on one another, everyone plays extremely differently into and against each other.
That said, for the most part if follows the philosophy of "if everyone is broken, it's on you to navigate it". Basically every character can break the game in some way, but none of them can do it in every way, so it comes down to game knowledge exploiting genuine flaws, rather than complex solitaire combos / footsies. The few bad characters are more due to them having questionable tracking that can drop their own combos / mess with their intiations, than actual weak movesets or low-tuned damage.
My main reason I like it is honestly the neutralgame (both in terms of initiation, and managing your resources of guard + assist + ultimate), it's far tighter than anyone gives it credit for, since most are more divided on the more visibly obvious floaty chains & physics. That, and combo inputs being more straightforward means it's much easier to pick up a different character when you get bored. It's just the right amount of "serious casual" that I like, and does away with most of the framedata autism that I don't have the time to learn or the energy to care about at times.
Keep in mind, I did say it was a guilty pleasure; if it sounds shit to you, have at it, I'm not denying it's not flawed or evenly balanced (in fact, I like it's flaws and uneven balance). I wouldn't recommend playing either of the previous games now the new one is announced, the single-player portions are unfettered dogshit because the AI is a joke and campaign presentation is lazy, there are definite unwinnable matchups with how much characters vary, and matchmaking has two categories of either "obvious kid" or "knows how to break the game as much as you", with no inbetween.
That said, I do really need to emphasise that the official models for the girls have some great porn.
