Do you guys like these types of games? I love em personally. Recently I've completed:
>Touhou Luna Nights
Really good, with nice visuals and audio plus unique mechanics that were used to their full extent.
>Record of Lodoss War Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth
Pretty much the same evaluation as Luna Nights, non surprisingly because its by the same studio.
>Gal Guardians Servants of the Dark
Fun combat, solid sprite work, charming story and characters, pretty open ended exploration due to intentional sequence breaking but unfortunately blatantly unfinished, probably gonna be mitigated with post launch patches, still a good game despite the flaws.

Gonna go back and finish up Bloodstained Ritual of the Night's Classic Mode II soon and then after that I'll play Blade Chimera and Nine Sols. Speaking of Bloodstained though, when do you guys expect Ritual of the Night 2 to be officially shown off? I was betting it was gonna be at the Switch 2 Direct considering the fact that supposedly all of the Bloodstained games sold the best on Switch 1 but it wasn't there, maybe at this year's not-E3?

I suck at these kinds of games. Last one I played was Rogue Legacy years ago. How is Bloodstained? I got a key for that at some point, but never played it. Have you played Astalon? Curious about that one as well.

>How is Bloodstained?
If you played the DS Castlevania games its more of the same, but in a good way, not exactly a looker (though I personally don't think its THAT ugly) but it pretty much nails every other aspect.
>Have you played Astalon?
I tried it briefly after getting my physical copy form Limited Jew Games (don't support them anymore and recommend you do the same) so can't really comment on it much, since I put it in the backlog but it seems good and I've heard great things from others about it.

If you suck at them just try out Lyle in Cube Sector.
It's pretty easy.

It looks like the OG website died in February 2025. Big F.

I like Metroid-likes. I'm not nearly as much of a fan of Igarashi's half-assed Castlevania games that (poorly) ripped off Super Metroid and threw in a bunch of unbalanced RPG mechanics. It's always been ironic that the best one of those games (Circle of the Moon) didn't even have his involvement. I'd much rather be playing a well-paced classic Cestlevania challenge than those.

Have you ever tried the level 1 hard modes in Portrait of Ruin and Order of Ecclesia? The only RPG elements come from the equipment you find and the ability to grind for levels is removed entirely, I personally though they were handled pretty well.

I've beaten Portait of Ruin's version of that. It's a good challenge but I wouldn't say it's entirely well-balanced.

I'm kinda hoping it takes a bit more time, personally. I'm sure it was only a skeleton crew on the back half of Bloodstained 1, but still the last mode of that was only last year and his new studio can't be all that big. The big takeaway from Bloodstained was "yeah it was pretty fun despite how rough it was" so if he really polished it up then I think it could be a definite hit.
Also give the IP back to Inti. I want Curse of the Moon 3. I couldn't get into the first GalGun spinoff despite being intentionally classic-y in design. Have yet to try the second one, which I do have to get around to.

Literally nobody calls them this. I've only seen one game to use the term, and it was Japanese and changed the term to metroidvania after people informed him about it.

Despite liking how it is currently I'd still recommend waiting for potential updates for it. It has been said during an English Inti Creates live stream during Steam Next Fest that there are plans to support the game post launch, plus the studio has had games with post launch update campaigns like with Dragon Marked for Death, Gunvolt 3 and Card-en-Ciel, so I do believe SotD will also get similar patches that add back missing content and modes. You waited this long to play it already so might as well wait a bit longer and get a more complete experience.

<Literally nobody calls them this.
Apparently the Japanese game community call them that. I personally don't but I know a lot of people get really anal over the metroidvania name so I threw in the only other somewhat widely used name for the genre.

I haven't played many, but my favorites are Tails Adventure on the Game Gear, The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on the Game Boy, and Spider-Man on Game Boy Color. I wish Tails got more standalone MetroidVanias... Spider-Man actually got a few more all through out the 2000's on the DS, but I haven't gotten around to those yet, but they do look quite good for what they are too.

I think I prefer the shorter and simpler ones, but I do like the genre.

Turns out my assumption about Servants of the Dark ended up being true. In today's Inti Creates stream they confirmed that they'll be updating the game until July and the first major update was released today, implementing some cut content that was found with data mining and various really good quality of live improvements. So yeah, if anyone's interested in the game but hasn't played it yet then you should just wait until the final July update.

You got a bigger version of that image?
Reverse imagesearch only gives me 502 errors and less pixels

It's concept art from the 1994 TV show, sadly that's the biggest version of the image I have...
