Studies that analysed which areas of the brain are active in professional chess players during a match came to the conclusion that high level players don't actually think ahead, they've simply played so much that they memorised a very large number of layouts and the best responses to them, to the point that they pretty subconsciously recognise them. So chess might teach you how to think ahead as a new player, but the more you play it, the less it helps your cognitive development. In other words, a random 90s RTS needs more situational awareness that chess. Just remember this whenever you come across a chessfag who thinks he's hot shit.
