Not only does valve release a contoller which costs 100 dollars which firstly short circuits if anything metallic touches it and secondly the controller has hardware drm which means that you need to have the steam client open to use it. What an absolute joke. Remember controller prices? Remember when you could buy a controller for 30 bucks? You still can get a controller for around that price so it is absurd that steam and microsoft is pushing for controllers that are this expensive. I think i looked up xbox controllers and saw that they were around 80 bucks? And there was a ELITE reminds me of the katana autist controller for nearly half the price.
Im way too off topic now so lets get back to shitting on steam. Steam just a day or two ago started selling the steam deck with a massive PRICE HIKE of several hundred dollars. Mind you that the default price was still expensive for the perfomance that it provides. What an absolute joke of a company. I guess tf2 and csgo cases weren't enough to fund another yacht for Gape. Fuck Gape and fuck his Cleveland Steamer Shitbox and the steam cult.

Steam is a self-fed storefront ecosystem that doubles as social media with plenty of feel-good gimmicks for continued patronage.
It's pointless to try and do honest business in good faith when there's a sizable portion of humanity that uses it for social networking.
What are you mad about specifically?

Not asking as a "U mad" or "Who hurt you". Is there a specific feature about the controller you like or were looking forward to? Are you concerend for humanity if the average consumer uncritically ignores price hikes?

If a game has aggresive DRM, then the publishers don't have faith that the game is fun enough on it's own merits to risk people trying for free. The same principle should be true for hardware.

If you have to jump through hoops to make a controller work without installing the likes of ((( Steam ))), the controller is shit and there's no reason to waste money on it when an Xbawks controller doesn't require ((( Valve )))'s software or any fucking around to get working.

Yeah, from looking into this further, the problem really is that this is a weird controller without Windows drivers. The next version of SDL3 supports it, and supposedly the hid_steam Linux driver is adding support for it, but I haven't found a source for the second claim yet.
OP might as well refer to the Dualshock 3 not having default Windows drivers as DRM instead of what it actually is: a lack of drivers. This sucks a lot and is pretty dickish of Valve, don't get me wrong, but it isn't DRM.

Good to see the dumbest of ragebait still gets transplanted here from twitter and 4/v/. I'll bite out of the kindness of my heart.

There's no DRM. Any application that supports SDL3 will work with the steam controller out of the box, without steam running, on both windows and linux. Try it with your favorite emulator today.

The controller objectively has more features than any other controller at its price range. There's no argument against this, which is why people will suddenly start saying 'you don't need those features anyway'.

Steam input beats any of the dogshit third party apps that you are required to install to use ANY extra buttons, or configure anything on your controllers because, spoiler, xinput is a dogshit standard that MSFT implemented precisely to break controllers to comply and ensure they set the guidelines for interfacing with games on your PC. A ton of premium controllers only allow you to set the extra buttons to an existing gamepad button because of this - steam input lets you set it to _anything_ on your keyboard, controller, or mouse.

The controller is easy to open, extremely easy to repair (they've fucking labeled most of the internals with QR codes so you can identify replacement parts), and is designed from top to bottom to make people that have made a killing off of selling hapless fucks 4 or 5 controllers through intentionally poor quality control seethe endlessly.

Enjoy your thread.

No shit. The problem is that there's an elephant in the room everyone likes to ignore, because admitting it has awkward implications for everyone (Valvedrones included).
The elephant in the room is this:
The sole reason Microsoft didn't turn Windows 8+ into a completely locked-down Metro appstore hell was because Valve saw this as an existential threat to itself and threw a fuckton of money, developers, custom hardware, and their major game distribution service at a competing OS. This spooked the shit out of Microsoft, so they boiled the frog slower.
No other game distributor or major publisher puts actual effort into preserving the real platform computer games run on: the operating system. This is an extremely ugly, awful truth. Valve runs a massive so-called store which technically only sells licenses for DRM-riddled games (technically Steam's DRM is optional, but an annoying majority of games use it), which anons rightfully see as cancer, and they pull dick moves like not giving their new gamepad a Windows driver. Yet somehow they're the only ones who put their money where their mouth is in this one specific, really important area. Every competitor, especially GOG (who cannot even be assed to port Galaxy to Linux), is content with the odd toothless grumble and sticks purely to their part of the application layer.
This position gives Valve a crazy amount of soft power. Complaining about it or being an internet activist does nothing. Doggedly sticking with Windows 7 and pirating everything is a temporary, personal bandaid which solves nothing. If you want to knock Valve down a peg, you have to either deal with the problem which creates their soft power or ask yourself: how do you make buying games from seperate game stores as convenient as doing everything through Steam?

Fuck it, I'll turn this into an exercise for your creativity.
The absolute heart of Steam is buying, downloading, and updating PC games. There are currently three main ways of doing this digitally:
>Download your game from a website and manually redownload updates through a web browser
>Download your game from a website and update it through a dedicated launcher
>Download and update your game through a store-specific client
There is an unofficial fourth option of using a third-party client which downloads and updates games from multiple stores. These have to manually add support for every new store, and break whenever said store's devs tweak how user authentication and downloads work.

What hypothetical options can you imagine? I've thought of 2.5 over the years.
