What's your preferred gaming audio setup, anon? Have any games' audio caught your attention lately?
On my end, I'm trying to set up A3D Alchemy for Slave Zero on Wine and swap out IndirectSound for DSOAL. I also heard from a friend recently that Superlux released a
MKII version of the HD668B which got rid of that shitty minicable which always broke for people, so I'm tempted to shell out for one of those again. My old HD668Bs had a way better soundstage than my current cans, so having a more durable pair of those specifically for vidya would be sick.

Some related fun stuff:

Been binging Half Life and it's mods for a while now, and GoldSource just has fantastic audio.
System Shock 2 took huge inspiration from it and improved on it tenfold with the work they did on Thief.

Thief 2s audio is amsterful
It's a goddamned shame most modern games have such terrible audio and middleware options like virtual surround are somehow even worse than the original bland mix.

It's interesting just how much character Half-Life's default reverb had over its EAX version (from what I've heard of the latter; can't really speak for it with A3D as I've only heard one sample of it in a webm years ago). The EAX version's reverb is objectively better and definitely has better positional audio, but I have to admit: something about the harshness of the default reverb combined with the sound effects gives the mix this real punchiness that sounds like no other game.
Have you messed around with the GoldSrc MetaAudio plugin at all?

Nope, all default
Had no idea it even had such a project, I'll be sure to give it a try after I finish Field Intensity and Reprocessing!

It makes sense though, release version likely had EAX support but Valve removed it after a few updates since it was no longer supported.

Open headphones are good. I prefer that to “noise” cancellation. If anything closed/open should be considered neutral.

Stick a microphone up ass and it plays like a speaker while you listen to and speak with people?

I wish more people considered open headphones as an option, let alone knew they existed. Yeah, they're impractical for noisy environments, but that better sense of spatial distance you get out of them is a huge boon for 3D vidya.

I think it's supposed to be a rhetorical question. How do you put a mic up your ass and have it output sound and vibrations?
Replies: >>307050 >>307056
>>307049
change the output to your mic, in theory if it has the ability to do so you'll get vibration out of it at least.
The guy probably said mic but might've meant some stupid dildo with tunctionality mang.

Beyerdynamic MMX300v2, basically DT990 with detachable cable and a mic, quite decent for constant wearing, passable for voice chats.

Speakers and microphones aren't fundamentally different, they both can technically output audio and get audio input.
This is how devices that don't even have a microphone (but have a speaker) listen to what you say.

Seriously though, fags need to enable EAX via DSOAL whenever they can, it makes games sound amazing.
Playing System Shock 2 and Doom 3 with them is fucking Unreal which also has EAX support
Has anyone ever gotten A3D to work on Wine?
Farthest I ever got was A3D 1.0 in GTAIII through DSOAL, though I think it used some fallback compatibility mode via EAX which didn't sound that great, though A3D 1.0 is also less advanced than later iterations of EAX and positional audio is handled by AL in DSOAL anyway. Attempting to run A3D 2.0 in any game that supports it results in a crash or the game automatically reverting to audio defaults.

Off-topic, but you might have greater success running a pci-passthrough VM, if IOMMU groups on motherboard are granular enough and dedicating spare GPU+display is agreeable. Whole stack has been quite stable for past 10 years and there are most single digit percents of performance loss. You can share audio via vban/pulseaudio/pipewire and input devices either via qemu USB sharing or synergy/deskflow (or just dedicate one of USB hosts).
