It'd odd how there doesn't seem to be a thread for them here, despite them being the most common technology in the world for many years now, that people can't seem to live without, it's a necessity nowadays.

What smartphones do you use, /tech/ anons?

I just got a Samsung Galaxy A25 as a birthday gift from my sister, it's the 1st time I've used one with 8GB RAM and a 120Hz refresh rate and I have to say, I thought people were dramatic over refresh rates for no reason, that it wasn't a big deal, but damn! I love just how smooth it is now, can't see myself going back to a 60Hz or even 90Hz screen after this one. It's also got a headphone jack and micro SD slot, rare today.

>I just got a Samsung Galaxy A25
I got the previous model the A24 last year, when my Huawei P10 Lite's screen cracked and the LCD broke after an accident. The jump between 60 and 120 hz and larger res was certainly a nice upgrade, but other than that I can't say I give a shit about 90% of its, or any other smartphone's, features. I only use my phone to call, text and seldom browse the internet when I'm not at my PC. I suppose it has a few neat features like the double tap to turn the screen on and off, wake on pick up, and always on display but at the end of the day it's just another phone.
Smartphones are almost not tech. I say this despite using them. From battery to headphone jack, useful features got removed and software get more bloated. Since the software is not open, most old phones are only trash. It's almost as /tech/ as an appliance.

I buy whichever one is cheapest, and Android so as to copy and paste my old APK files into, and never install a sim card and use a free VOIP instead. If they came pre-rooted and compatible with all service providers people would not hate them so much that prefer 'real computers'.
It's all botnet and sucks big fat donkey dick!

Because they are borderline offtopic for /tech/ board, as you can't actually do anything tech related on them.
You can put tits on your smartfridge but it won't make it tech related, unless you hacked it to do that.
>>16506
But modern phones already do a week of standby lol (probably more with custom rom and right settings), unless I misunderstood what you meant by idle.

How would /tech/ a PC-style sumafo?
And by that I mean a fon that can be fully assembled and disassembled out of standardized interchangeable components by the user.
There was a project trying to do that circa 2013 that had a motherboard with a bunch of LGA-esque flat connectors with adjacent magnets on the back and one for the screen in front, one of the cool features showcased that the size each "module" would occupy wasn't fixed so you could remove extra microSD slots+gamer CPU+camera+small battery for a big nigger battery with a small toaster CPU and no camera as an example while retaining the radio/wireless module.
IIRC it got shitcanned because of the jews the magnets weren't enough to hold the modules in place or something.

Is there a better mounting system?
How would parts be ideally standardized, and would a "scalable" single connector type be preferable to dedicated ones?

I mean, just tape the hotspot to a raspberry pi, simple as. If computer is strong enough you can just run an android emulator or vm or something if you needed to gag on apk cock.

And yes I know you meant not a system on a chip but I'm just shitposting and technically replacing parts of some single board computer is still easier than day foam.

I think the ideal form factor would be pic related, because it is about the size of a credit card, and it has a 2:3 screen. Although I'd also want a trackpoint between the two phone buttons, or maybe you could go full autimso and put a trackpoints and a few buttons on both ends of the screen.

But the problem here is you'd still have to use lots of custom parts, so the only way forward would be to make the whole thing open source and give every two bit jewtuber with a 3D printer one for free, and hope that it catches on. Still, you could have different screens, different keyboards, and different SCBs for modularity.

I got my first smartphone because it was required for a job. I'd like to go back to not having one as soon as possible. It's an endless source of stress and makes me feel like I'm being spied on. It's proprietary with a constant Internet connection, camera, microphone, and GPS. I see people getting them as toddlers and it devastates their development and health.

> As many have noticed, the PinePhone Pro is currently out ot stock on the Pine Store. Unfortunately we have to deliver you the following news: the PinePhone Pro is officially discontinued. We were told it didn’t sell well enough to keep production going. But the good news for current owners are that spare parts will still be made for up to two years, depending on demand. Meanwhile, the trusty PinePhone (A64) is still alive and kicking, and Pine Store plans to keep it rolling for about two more years.
The pro version was already way too weak for its price, especially if we consider how unreliable it was even for basic telephony, and then the basic version is even worse. Guess I should go full Y2K retro with a dumbphone, a dedicated GPS, and a MiniDisc player, instead of dreaming about a phone running Linux or one of them BSDs.

Don't buy that soyes though, it broke too fast. It literally broke from just sitting and I didn't own it a single year and barely touched it. I think it had a software/hardware bomb. Won't even show charge screen. I need to crack it open to see if the battery exploded but then you'd figure it'd be poofy....

I'm sorry to hear, anon... hope you can find a better small alternative. If you do, make sure to tell us about it!
Shok Volt SV55, some shitass free government phone with free government carrier because I'm low income enough to qualify for free shit like that and Medicare and Medicaid, because the White House incentivizes poverty and harshly punishes hard work and success (particularly by straight white male conservative christians) unless you were born a millionaire.

I'm so sick of it I bought a refurbished Pixel 9 Fold and intend to put Graphene on it and get the most reliable local carrier in my area no matter who they are and pay $40 or even $70 a month if I have to for a non-shitass phone and non-shitass carrier evermore.

I'm loving OneUI 8.0 and it's customization, which is intuitive, but allows for tons of freedom, especially with Good Lock, it's making me like my overheating and battery draining Galaxy A25 a little more, though I still wish it'd get something other than Exynos, and those 6000/7000mAh batteries the M series used to get, I hope 8.0 is better than 7.0 there at least.

I haven't use a smartphone for years, but I got a new one because it has a jack and micro SD slot.

It depends on your usecase. If you want to draw I'd recommend Sketchbook. If you want to emulate I'd recomend RetroArch or Lemuroid. SoundHound is great for identifying songs. Files by Marc Apps & Software is useful for file browsing, also enjoy QuickEdit, RAR and Termux.
