>What's something you've learned in the past year from this shitty war?
At this point I don't think there is anything really new to learn. The real problem is that everyone is still working on what has been learned so far, and no one seems to have the final solution to the drone question yet.
Replies: >>12060
>>12059
Because of the solutions tried more drones have been the only effective one.

>What's something you've learned in the past year from this shitty war?
Let's talk about the tech.
I think this push towards drone warfare is just a meme and the serious players already have countermeasures in place but just aren't fielding them because they're afraid of their countermeasures being countered. At the same time, they want the tech that has already been countered to appear more viable than it really is because they want their enemies to over-invest in them. TL;DR the usefulness of drones is being exaggerated.

FWIU, Moldova is a weird Romanian/Russian mix that tried and failed to establish their larger historical territories. As a result, once the war went hot, the Moldovan PM said something retarded about annexation of Odessa oblast and possibly Vinnitsya or Chernitsy if things went right.

I think someone reminded her that everything goes onto the internet these days, so they got a bit quieter until the pipelines started getting hit. Now, they're probably recognizing their size and position and making a move towards self-preservation.

Personally, I think it'd be really fucking funny if they forced an offensive and either Ukraine or Romania took them by force once they were overextended. Prolly why they didn't move on Odessa. :P

I remember hearing from someone who was there as part of a NATO mission before 2020 that the Russians always like to hold exercises with hundreds of vehicles and live ammo at the Baltic borders. I guess they stopped it after 2022, so maybe they decided to throw some spare troops there as a show of force, and it's just a return to the usual posturing.

Most nuclear launch sites in the US are located in the northernmost states to cut down travel time if/when they're launched over the North Pole. It's a very likely reason for Trump trying to annex Greenland and Putin responding that "you getting Greenland won't help you as much as getting Ukraine will help me."

That's worse though. If Russia is concerned about the effectiveness of their arsenal then doesn't that mean they're more likely to err on the side of "caution" and start it at a lower escalation threshold?

I still think the best thing for Russia to do is to set off a full powered nuclear weapon up in their sub arctic test area on Salami Novocaine island, just to grasp the West's attention. A very clear and unmistakable "Rine ends here" action.

On one side there is a modern army, with its home territory right next door, that somehow still cannot figure out a final solution to a rag tag conscript army running on handouts. In theory the F-16s could deliver nuclear bombs, moreover, even a rusty 155mm howitzer could be used to lob nuclear shells (assuming some of them are still around); but in practice handing out some nukes to the Ukrainians would be way too risky, so it sounds more like the typical red line bullshit from the Russians than a real threat.

See the problem with dealing with Russia on the subject of escalation is that they apparently respond to any provocation by rolling three separate d20s to see what their response is. Anything less that three rolls of 20 they do nothing, but if they roll all three it's massive retaliation. That's the only thing that seems to make sense given their track record.

I mean yeah obviously but it makes it very obscure what are actual red lines for Russia and what are merely dotted red lines. Seems like it will make eventual escalation more likely. What is actual thoughtful "lets not cross the Rubicon until we're put to it" behavior from Russia is interpreted as empty "I'll turn this car around RIGHT NOW" threats by the West. Eventually an actual red line is going to be crossed at this rate.

Trump is no help either. He wants to play peacemaker but he only has surface level understanding of things. Not to mention he's doing it for the wrong reasons. He wants to use it as a meas to project power where he can just command other peoples to resolve things on the US's whim, and also on a personal not he really wants that Nobel.

It sounds like the Hungarians didn't want Interpol or whoever making a move on their territory. Probably because of the nuclear shitfest that would ensue if a bunch of cops or soldiers tried to "ambush" the leaders of two superpowers and carry one away in cuffs.

Good for them. Glad they remember how WWI started.
>>12351
The problem is Russia knows that the EU is pushing for a war and if that happens there is no scenario where America stays out. So they're probably waiting for a position where they can reasonable do area denial across Europe and hold for some sort of negotiated peace before WW3 gets really out of hand.
Unfortunately our own leaders are psychotic and will push for unconditional surrender and the balkanization of Russia so they can loot the place. I know all that really means is replacing the looters but all things considered I don't want to die because of them.

If the spool weren't mounted on the drone then the cable would have to be able to slide against whatever it touches, with all the friction potentially causing issues.
With the spool on the drone the cable can just rest against whatever it touches.

>The Russians are still looking to implement measures against Ukrainian long-range drones:
>“In Russia, slow but belated countermeasures against UAVs are beginning to be introduced
>Following the adoption of in Russian regions to combat long-range enemy drones, information is coming in about targeted decisions to protect critically important enterprises.
>Since September 2025, the company JSC "Novomoskovsk Joint Stock Company 'Azot'", located in Novomoskovsk, Tula region (a major producer of chemical products including ammonia, urea, and other fertilizers) has been seeking a service provider to set up a protective barrier against UAVs, maintained by aerostats. The cost of the work is estimated at only 9 million rubles ,and the tender will conclude in October this year.
>More than a year ago (July 1, 2024), at the conference "Technologies for Detection and Counteraction of UAVs" in St. Petersburg, a drone protection system for facilities called 'Barrier' was presented, consisting of "floating" nets installed on aerostats. According to open data, there are about 7 enterprises in Russia that produce cargo airships, the use of which for drone protection has not yet been heard of.
>According to our data, some owners of oil enterprises have begun to approach the protection of flammable objects (oil storage facilities, in particular) somewhat more intelligently – creating rigid frame structures around them at a greater distance than before from the building. However, they have not yet reached perimeter fences and gabions – perhaps they are also waiting for orders from the Supreme Command
>At the same time, these measures are obviously insufficient. They are a reaction to drone tactics from two to three years ago and provide for defense organization against low-speed and poorly maneuverable UAVs directly near the facilities, which is essentially the last line of defense .
>It is necessary to implement (yesterday) interceptor drones, laser installations, automated machine gun posts, optical-electronic and acoustic UAV detection systems, situational awareness systems, and a single deeply echeloned (directly from frontline areas) air threat counteraction system at the lower level (i.e., against drones).
>In other words, it is necessary to engage in preemptive destruction of enemy drones at the maximum distance from the objects of attacks, outside populated areas, and with the most economical means possible.
>The enemy constantly improves tactics, and soon "slow movers" will be replaced by swarms of jet and maneuverable UAVs, which current fire group weapons will no longer be able to shoot down and certainly cannot be jammed by electronic warfare”

That's not a new concept. NATO did similar tests and abandoned the idea because the missile would leave a trail of radiation behind it.
If Russia doesn't solve that problem, deployment of the weapon could be legally counted as a nuclear attack.

The General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine is gathering all second-rate units and some special units in the Grishino area. Various National Guard security regiments, police battalions, engineers, and other second-rate forces. The enemy has already tried to counterattack from there and failed.

I think they will try a couple more times, but the main goal, apparently, is to buy time and set up strong positions on the Grishino line to prevent the Russian Armed Forces from exploiting their success after encircling Krasnoarmeysk and Dimitrov."

It's a slow burn in Dnepropetrovsk but seems like the Russians are taking at least one village a day in this section of the frontline, much more quicker then other parts of the war.

Why?
Maybe to let western media be there to show off the Russian advance? Some sort of publicity/propaganda purpose is my guess because of the seemingly imminent fall and the mention of media entry
