I think the biggest change, off the top of my head, is that people used to bring things to the internet. Its like, how many posts on 4chan is "what is this book?", whereas, in the past, an anon would read the book and give their opinion. Everything is a low quality question instead of a statement, which is what "lurk more" was designed to protect against. Its like people used to actually have real lives and interests and used the internet to help explore them and meet other enthusiasts. Now, its like there has been a fundamental change in how people use the internet, and how they communicate with each other, and it is simply lower quality.
Of course, the change from the "community-model" to the "audience-model" has had a massive effect as well.
