yes, and even more shocking is that there's a relatively high contingent of those who do NOT have an internal dialog. Maybe not as high as half of that 80%, but it's there.
I too am somewhat of a "negative" misanthrope, in that at one point I had the naive belief that people were generally good; but through many adult years, and especially the absurdities of 2020-2021, I hold now that there are far fewer truly "Good at heart" people. My general appraisal is that about 80% of the population are followers, the sheep, the Game Players who have "Bought In" fully.
They will do whatever keeps themselves entertained, comfy and fed, and follow whomever promises them the greatest security and comfort, like the Lemmings presented by Pierce.

The rest are split between dark triad, self-interested and often "Evil" people who seek power, wealth, and status, and the Altruists who seek to guide humanity towards higher aspirations, usually by attempting to exemplify Honor, Merit, Goodwill, Honesty, and Trust.
Those 2 groups I'd say, take another 7-8% of the population.
The residual is made up of those who have fully seceded from the humanity game. The Hermits, and Wabibito's.
They just decided the Game is NOT for them and they'd step outside of that ruleset entirely. Usually solo, but sometimes in smol groups, or couples.
A KEY problem of modernity is that most of the 80% is under a technological "Spell" a kind of hypnotic induction, quite literally, and this is a new development in humanity.
The original term for it fell under the 70s label, "Future Shock", but it is far more invasive than that.
I believe many of that willfully blind and self-centered 80%, are suffering from cognitive atrophy from not using mental facilities humans have depended on for at least 100k years.
Being constantly awash in Hyper-sexualized, Emotion inducing, audio-visual propaganda, dopamine farming, and continual surveillance, has taken a dramatic toll on human mentation.
Television into the internet, into social media, into "Netflix and Chill" "culture" has possibly been a bigger detriment to humanity than even the Black Death, and all wars combined has ever gotten close to.
Hard not to simultaneously hope for the best, but also want to watch it ALL BURN DOWN.
