The official social media account claimed that any and all pairings in rebuild are "up to interpretation", while the sound designer claimed that neither VA was directed to act as lovers in the ending in an interview
However, this all comes off as damage control due to the negative reaction to the pairing

Also what I really hated about rebuild is how it treated Asuka like a whore, they even teased “something” with Kensuke on top of the Mari shit, like Anno wanted to tap into the NTR market. Some would argue Asuka was like that in the original when she wanted to suck Kaji, but the context was completely different, she was a teenager into an adult, that always happens.

Being made by Anno doesn't mean it's good. Your logic is basically the same as "new=bad" but it's "anno=good". Every good directors have their stinkers and even shit directors got their good anime. The problem with rebuilt is that the original was fine and iconic on its own despite its flaws. In general, remakes or reboot suck because they rarely bring something better to the table, the charm of the era is gone for a lot of them and the animation industry feel cheaper. Look at Berserk's anime for the most flagrant example of remakes/reboots being akin to shitting on the beloved original so its no wonder that people make the shortcut that "remake=new=bad". There are some good reboots like full metal alchemist or Hellsing too. With constant reboots and remake, one can't help but feel a lot of them are just cashgrabs banking on the fame of their predecessor, so that's probably the basis of his capeshit argument.

Fullmetal and Hellsing don't count as remakes as the original anime "adaptations" didn't even follow the manga.
