Not OP, It's less about wish fulfillment and more about a struggle to unfuck your life and function even remotely in society but since there is no cute girl that happens to stalk you and to pull you outside of your apartment despair depression and all in real life. It would likely end up that you end up abusing substances until you die. But the anime wouldn't function if it weren't there wasn't something to force him out.
It's simply a topic that anime cannot touch anymore at all without going all retard and basically being low hanging fruit shock comedy like that smoking cat anime where the humor isn't even self deprecation but simply the fact that it is disgusting and ugly.
Ultimately you can criticize it all you want but someone stuck into a depressive way of living like this one won't ever recover without someone essentially forcing them out of their habits.
